The Ideal Sustainable Suburban Home

July 11th, 2008 -- Posted in Uncategorized | 8 Comments »

What would it take to re-model a normal suburban home into a sustainable eco-home?

That’s what this new page is dedicated to exploring. I am going to be researching all of the modifications that can be made to a regular home - and detailing them here - complete with products, pricing, and discussion.

Why? For two reasons. One - I want to undertake this project myself when I buy my own home, so why not do the research now, so that I’m ready to go when that time comes? Two - to share what I find with others and become a useful resource for others who want to do the same!

I’d love for you to get involved! How? By telling us what you would want in your dream sustainable home, and telling us about the changes you have made, how they have worked, and how much they cost/save!

Check back regularly for updates - this is an ongoing project, folks!

The Ideal Sustainable Suburban Home

  • Greywater System

  • Compost Chute? (is there such a thing… :)
  • Insulation
  • Contained Fireplace
  • Eco Light Bulbs

Keep updated on the page I’ve created!!

The Beautiful Oz

June 18th, 2008 -- Posted in Uncategorized, garden | 4 Comments »

I was talking to Nick on the phone tonight, and the topic of the weather arose. This often came up in jest before he left, as we here in Oz were entering ‘winter’ and complaining about the cold, while Nick just laughed, sitting there in his shorts and t-shirt.

So, we discussed the current weather in our respective parts of the world. Oz - winter, about 22-24ish degrees today. England - summer, about 22-24ish degrees today. :)

I love my country. I really was blessed to grow up in such a wonderful place with such a wonderful climate. I never have to worry about frost in my garden - just my nemesis… (yes, possum, I’m pointing at YOU). So, in the spirit of sharing my good fortune, here are some photos I took on my balcony the other afternoon when the sun was just right…

A lovely day, all around.

Sustainable Suburbia Forum!

June 15th, 2008 -- Posted in Uncategorized, forum | 2 Comments »

I have decided to create a forum based here at Sustainable Suburbia! I hope it will be a place where like-minded people can meet to discuss issues of sustainability, frugal living, gardening, cooking, creating, water saving, transport and more. If you have an issue you’d like to discuss, please feel free to visit and leave your thoughts.

It is brand-new as of today, so I’m wide open to suggestions from you all as to what forums I should add, or what should be changed, and I’ll be on the look out for some moderators if it actually becomes popular :) Just look up the top to find the link!

Thank you all for visiting Sustainable Suburbia - I really appreciate all the wonderful comments and encouragement from you all so far!

I’ve just looked at my feedburner stats and it’s telling me I suddenly have zero subscribers. I’m hoping it’s a glitch - could someone on my feed leave me a comment if it’s still working? Thanks so much, guys!

Sweet, sweet water!

May 31st, 2008 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

As of Wednesday, the clouds rolled in, and since Thursday, we’ve been getting some lovely, much-needed rain. It’s nice to know I don’t have to worry about the garden getting enough water, and that all the landscape is getting a drink!

The sweet peas and sugar snap beans are growing well…

The Cage - late May

As is the lettuce…

Lettuce - May 08

It’s definitely been doona and cuppa weather - worst type of days to have to get up and go to work!

One of the nicest lazy pleasures in life, in my book, is curling up in bed with tea and a good novel as the rain patters on the roof. It’s so relaxing, just letting the day slip by in quiet and dusky contemplation.

It doesn’t happen very often - there’s usually too many little things that I need to do swirling around in my mind to allow myself to stay in bed all day! Sometimes I miss being a kid, when this was acceptable!

But sometimes, we just need to let go off the thousand and one things on our to-do list and just enjoy the quiet of a lazy, rainy day.
